Now what exactly is a touchpad keyboard? This article will clarify the details of how touchpad keyboards function and where you can get them.
Touchpad Keyboard Overview
The idea of touchpad and keyboards together is relatively new but touchpads have been around for a long time as the typical navigation method for notebooks and laptop computers. The touchpad surface is frequently a smooth, specialized surface that translates the motion of a finger into a relative position on a monitor. When a touchpad is available on a laptop it replaces the functionality of a mouse. With a touchpad keyboard, you have the option of utilizing the touchpad or the mouse as your pointing device.
The popularity of touchpads is what started this new market of touchpad keyboards and it has continued to develop over the years. There are several manufacturers of touchpad keyboards and prices are usually a bit more than typical keyboards but the equivalent price as some of the keyboard/mouse combos that you can buy.
Is a Touchpad Keyboard Right For Me?
This is a matter of preference and the easiest way to find out if you like using a touchpad is to try one out on a notebook. They may take some getting used to but the good news is they can be adjusted for sensitivity so you can make it adjust to how rapidly your finger moves across the touchpad. There are usually two buttons, just like on a mouse that provide left and right click capabilities and these too can be changed for your personal preference. Some people find utilizing touchpad keyboards to be very useful because they have typing and pointing fairly close to each other so the hands don’t have to move away from the keyboard.
Where to Locate Touchpad Keyboards
Your local discount or computer store probably has this type of keyboard though they may be a bit harder to find locally as they are not a common computer accessory. The best place to find them is probably on the Internet where you can evaluate different models, see ratings, and find the lowest prices.

Apple could cut iPad prices if the device isn’t selling well, the Wall Street Journal reports.
According to Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope, who met with Apple executives Sunday night, Apple indicated that it would slash iPad prices if the device didn’t sell enough units. “While it remains to be seen how much traction the iPad gets initially, management noted that it will remain nimble (pricing could change if the company is not attracting as many customers as anticipated),” Shope wrote in a post-meeting note.
The iPad is already priced aggressively, at just $499 for the starting model (16GB, no 3G) — much less than initially expected. Apple is perhaps bolstering itself against the potentially lackluster iPad market — since the announcement of Apple’s wonder-tablet, the iPad has been under constant fire with regard to its name, its lack of a camera and multitasking, and the argument that the iPad is just a giant iPod touch.
The Macworld conference, the world’s biggest show devoted to Apple Inc., is missing a key ingredient this year: Apple.
For the first time in its 25-year run, Macworld won’t have an Apple booth on the exhibition floor. And Apple’s biggest celebrity, Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, won’t be there to unveil new products when the show gets under way tomorrow in San Francisco.
Instead, the event aims to be an Apple “fan fest” that showcases third-party software and accessories. In lieu of Jobs, Macworld is touting appearances by filmmaker Kevin Smith, the director of “Clerks,” and Guy Kawasaki, who served as an “evangelist” for the Mac when it was introduced in 1984.
“I don’t think you can build a case that it helps that Apple is not going to be there,” Kawasaki said. Even so, he’s convinced that attendees will flock to the event. “Why? Because the Macintosh and iPhone have such a loyal following.”
For the first time in its 25-year run, Macworld won’t have an Apple booth on the exhibition floor. And Apple’s biggest celebrity, Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs, won’t be there to unveil new products when the show gets under way tomorrow in San Francisco.
It was at Macworld Boston in August 1997 that Jobs made his first public appearance after retaking leadership of Apple, ending a decade-long absence from the company he co-founded. He used that event to mend Apple’s relationship with Microsoft Corp. by announcing a technology accord between the companies.
In later keynotes, Jobs unveiled new versions of the Mac computer and iPod player. In January 2007, he announced the iPhone — Apple’s move into the mobile-phone market — whipping the crowd into a frenzy.
Last year’s Macworld was Apple’s last, and Jobs didn’t appear because of health reasons. Marketing chief Phil Schiller delivered the keynote speech and won his own applause by thanking folks “for showing up.”
The Cupertino, California-based company says it doesn’t need Macworld anymore because it can reach customers directly through its own events and its network of retail stores — something that didn’t exist before 2001.
Controlling the Message
The decision to quit didn’t come as a complete surprise to Macworld organizers. “This maps to Apple’s ideology for controlling every aspect of their message,” said Paul Kent, general manager for Macworld. “They made it very clear that their stores are the outlet for reaching their customers. They wish Macworld well.”
For Apple’s so-called fanboys, Jobs’s Macworld keynote speech was one of the most coveted tickets of the year. They lined up days in advance to see Jobs, greeting the turtleneck- clad CEO with a standing ovation when he walked on stage — then delivering more applause each time he touted an “insanely great” new technology.
Online consumer marketplace Retrevo reports that the number of people who have heard about the tablet but are uninterested in buying one, has doubled from 26 percent (before the tablet’s unveiling) to 52 percent.
The flexibility in pricing is reminiscent of the iPhone’s release in 2007 — when Apple slashed the price of the iPhone by $200 just two months after the phone’s debut.
Also in Shope’s post-meeting note: Despite what some believe, Apple officials don’t think that the iPad is in danger of “cannibalizing” other Apple lines. According to the execs, there is a clear “segmentation of capabilities” that suggests “cannibalization may be less of a concern than most currently believe.”
“As a keynote speaker, Jobs cannot be replaced,” said Tim Bajarin, an analyst with Creative Strategies in Campbell, California, who has attended every Macworld show. “It was the kind of event that let Apple users and potential users kick the tires.”
By remaining flexible on pricing, it might seem as though Apple is prematurely predicting a failure of sorts in its iPad. Of course, we must remember that the iPad is a tablet in a (mostly) tablet-less world. Apple has a history of changing the world with its technologies (think about the MP3 market before the iPod), and perhaps erring on the cautious side is the way Apple does it.

Dell XPS M170 keyboard ( http://www.papatek.com/Dell-Keyboard/Dell-XPS-M170-keyboard.html ) can also use a variety of other typing key arrangements. The most widely known is Dvorak, named for its creator, August Dvorak. The Dvorak layout places all of the vowels on the left side of the laptop keyboard and the most common consonants on the right. The most commonly used letters are all found along the home row. The home row is the main row where you place your fingers when you begin typing. People who prefer the Dvorak layout say it increases their typing speed and reduces fatigue.
Most keyboards have between 80 and 110 keys, including: Typing keys, A numeric keypad, Function keys, Control keys. Using a laptop keyboard, a person can type a document, use keystroke shortcuts, access menus, play games and perform a variety of other tasks. Dell keyboard can have different keys depending on the manufacturer, the operating system they’re designed for, and whether they are attached to a desktop computer or part of a laptop. But for the most part, these keys, also called keycaps, are the same size and shape from keyboard to keyboard. They’re also placed at a similar distance from one another in a similar pattern, no matter what language or alphabet the keys represent. Here is the basic knowledge about Dell XPS M170 keyboard.
The numeric keypad is a more recent addition to the Dell XPS M170 keyboard. As the use of computers in business environments increased, so did the need for speedy data entry. Since a large part of the data was numbers, a set of 17 keys, arranged in the same configuration found on adding machines and calculators, was added to the Dell laptop keyboard.
A Dell XPS M170 keyboard developed for Linux users features Linux-specific hot keys, including one marked with “Tux” the penguin — the Linux logo/mascot. A computer can also use separate character maps, overriding the one found in the Dell laptop keyboard. This can be useful if a person is typing in a language that uses letters that don’t have English equivalents on a laptop keyboard with English letters.
People can also set their computers to interpret their keystrokes as though they were typing on a Dell XPS M170 keyboard even though their actual keys are arranged in a QWERTY layout. In addition, operating systems and applications have keyboard accessibility settings that let people change their keyboard’s behavior to adapt to disabilities.

Toshiba’s memory-chip business returned a profit in the nine months to December, reversing losses seen a year earlier as cost reductions and price stability in the flash markets helped significantly improve results, it said last week.
Toshiba will consolidate its flash memory operations in Japan this year as it seeks to improve production efficiency, it said Wednesday.
The world’s number-two maker of flash memory will shift chip-packaging operations currently carried out in Fukuoka, west Japan, to its chip factory in Yokkaichi, central Japan. A portion of Toshiba’s packaging is already handled at Yokkaichi so the move, which is scheduled to take place in November, will bring all of Toshiba’s domestic flash memory production and packaging together at a single site.
Flash memory is the type of memory commonly found in digital cameras, music players and inside memory cards. It has the ability to retain data even when no power is being supplied and the market for flash chips is incredibly competitive and price cyclical.
Targeted towards the business-minded, Toshiba has included Windows 7 Touch on that 12.1-inch swiveling display, allowing users to work on sketches and notes. To further draw in the professional on-the-go (or really clumsy), the Portégé M780 is built with a semi-rugged case and totes a spill-resistant keyboard to deflect some of that coffee.
By consolidating its operations Toshiba said it will be able to improve coordination and cooperation within its flash operations and improve efficiency of chip development and trial production of new chips.
Most workers affected by the change will be offered positions in Yokkaichi so Toshiba does not expect and significant job losses from the move, said Hiroki Yamazaki, a Toshiba spokesman in Tokyo.
In parallel with the reorganization of its domestic flash operations, Toshiba plans to increase its reliance on third-party chip packagers outside of Japan. At present roughly 70 percent of Toshiba’s flash memory chips are sent overseas for packaging, but Toshiba plans to increase this to 80 percent by March 2011.
What is really getting some attention is the power behind the Toshiba tablet laptop. Buyers will have the option between Intel Core i3 and Core i5 processors.
Overall Toshiba’s electronic devices division, which includes its flash memory operations, saw sales slide 12 percent in the nine months to December and operating losses of ¥46 billion (US$509 million).
The better results from the flash memory business led Toshiba to halve its loss forecast for the electronic devices division for the current fiscal year. It now expects the division to lose ¥30 billion in the year to the end of March. Overall Toshiba expects to record a profit of ¥100 billion for the same period.

Toshiba Corp., Japan’s largest supplier of nuclear reactors, plans to sell $400 million worth of power-generation equipment by 2015 in a joint venture with India’s JSW Group as the South Asian nation seeks to double capacity in the next seven years.
The venture plans to produce steam turbines and generators ranging in size from 500 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts, the two companies said in a joint statement today. Toshiba is among the prospective bidders for orders from NTPC Ltd., India’s largest power producer, which is seeking equipment to produce 7,260 megawatts of power later this month, its single biggest contract.
The joint venture, in which Toshiba owns 75 percent, expects to get its first customer in 2010, Atsuhiko Izumi, corporate vice president, told reporters in Chennai in southern Tamil Nadu state, where the two companies are building a plant.
The director said that the relocation of the firm’s factory from Vietnam to Indonesia, was expected to boot monthly production by over 50 per cent to 100,000 unit this year. The product would be marketed in the region, he said.
The firm would increase the number of workers employed from 750 to 1,200 people. Toshiba has invested some US$156.6 million in Indonesia since it opened shop in 1995.
Indonesian Industry Minister MS Hidayat said that Toshiba planned to add some US$35 million investment in the country.
“If we get a contract from NTPC, the joint venture with JSW will produce the turbines and generators,” Izumi said
The Japanese company won an order in August 2007 to supply five large steam turbines and generators to Tata Power Co., India’s biggest electricity generator outside state control. The five units of 830 megawatts each will be shipped to Tata Power’s coal-fired plant being built at Mundra in western India, he said.
Indian utilities plan to add 78,700 megawatts of generation capacity in the five years to March 2012 and 100,000 megawatts in the following five, according to the country’s Power Ministry. India’s generation capacity was 156,092 megawatts as of Dec. 31. One megawatt is enough to power about 200 middle-class Indian homes.
Japanese electronics giant Toshiba has picked up Indonesia as its regional production hub for liquid crystal display (LCD) television set and has relocated its Vietnamese factory to Indonesia, a local media reported here Tuesday.
“Indonesia will be the only production base for Toshiba LCD TV in Asia and Oceania,” President Director PT Toshiba Consumer Product Indonesia (TCPI), Yuzo Tsuchiya quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying, reports Xinhua news agency.
“The Indian market has grown faster than expected and we expect it to be a 15 to 20 gigawatt market in the next few years,” Izumi said.
Together with nuclear-reactor sales targeted at the U.S., the U.K., South Africa and China, Toshiba wants to expand thermal power-plant equipment sales in India. The venture will compete for orders with state-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., India’s biggest power-equipment maker, and Larsen and Toubro Ltd. as local utilities add capacity to curb blackouts in the world’s second fastest-growing major economy.
Toshiba may face competition from Alstom SA, the world’s third-largest power plant builder. India approved proposals by Paris-based Alstom and its subsidiaries to form two joint ventures with Bharat Forge Ltd. to manufacture power plant equipment and invest 70.5 million euros ($98 million), according to a government statement on Jan. 21 that didn’t give more details.

Order a replacement key for your HP Pavilion dv6t-1000 Keyboard . Key sizes vary by manufacturer if you have lost the key. Order retainers also if they are needed. When the new key arrives , do the following. (That is assuing you need a new key.) Pry a nearby key near the one that fell off of the keyboard.. (Try not to break anything in the process.) Examine how the retainer attaches to the key. Place this key back onto the keyboard.
Pick up the retainer if need it and place it on the area where you will put the replacement key. Place the retainer over the button that detects the key press. The retainer should fit snugly over this button on most laptops. Do not force the button.
Replace the button you pried off to determine how the keys were connected. Snap it back on. Take the replacement key for the laptop you ordered and place it pack on the same way you replaced the key next to it. When it is back on properly, you should hear a firm snap. Turn the computer back on and see if the keys you removed from the keyboard work. If the replaced key does not work after you have replaced it, check the key to make sure the new key was installed properly.
Sometimes it may be necessary to replace the entire keyboard of a laptop. This procedure requires taking apart the case, unhooking the cord that attaches the keyboard and carefully removing the keyboard from the computer. Working on laptops requires skill and patience. People engaging in laptop repair must be careful not to damage nearby components when removing the keyboard. The basic process requires attaching the cable for the keyboard back to the case, laying it down, and placing the case back together.
When a key falls off a keyboard it is troublesome, but HP Pavilion dv6t-1000 Keyboard can be easily replaced. When a key falls off a laptop, the problem is much worse, since the keyboard is part of the computer. Therefore, it is important for laptop owners to know how to fix a key in case one comes loose and falls off.
step 1
Pick up the key and any other parts that fell loose. Make sure you don’t lose anything.
Step 2
Detach the key retainer from the key. The retainer is usually a coupe little plastic pieces that can move, and that snap into the key. If the retainer is still attached to the keyboard in its metal bindings, keep it there.
Step 3
Remove another key to observe how the retainer fits into the bindings. Usually it involves slipping one part under a metal hook or groove, then snapping the opposite side in place. You don’t always have to remove another key if you can figure out how to do it yourself.
Step 4
Once the retainer is in place, snap the key back on by pressing it into the retainer.
Tips:
* Do not try to push the key back in place right away, until you are sure the key retainer is in place properly. Attempting o push the key with the retainer still attached back into place can bend the metal housing making it impossible to get the key back in place.
* Do not try to force anything to hard. The only part that will require a little force is snapping the key back in place after the retainer is set properly.
* If the key came out, but the retainer is still attached, just snap the key back in place.
* If the retainer or the bindings on the keyboard key itself become damaged, using a drop of superglue can bind things in place–but the key might not sit or type exactly the same as all the other keys.

Iced non-fat doubleshot espressos with no whip are amazing, but when spilled on your keyboard are potentially problematic. This is a guide for removing liquids from a standard keyboard using a sit-down home computer. This has not been tested for laptops, but the same steps could probably be used safely.
1. You’re typing along, and you reach for the mouse, only to knock over your drink. Onto the Toshiba Satellite L300 Keyboard. First things first, wipe up as much of the spill with a napkin, then save your work as as fast as you can, and turn off the computer.
#
2. Un plug keyboard, and turn upside down (keys facing an absorbent surface), allowing any excess liquids to drain out.
#
3. Once drained, (still keeping upside down) use cotton swabs, or rolled up napkins to go between the keys, and try to absorb any extra liquid. If necessary, use a hairdryer on a warm/low setting 5-6 inches away from keyboard to evaporate anything still inside.
#
4. Allow keyboard to drain overnight, or for several hours, turning it over multiple times to allow anything inside the keys to dry up.
#
5. Once everything is dry, use a damp napkin or wipe to remove any residue left by the drink. Once that dries, keyboard is most likely ready for use
Tips
* This method will not always work. Spiling a gallon of water will probably be the end of your keyboard, and this guide probably will not be able to salvage it. BUT- In most cases, where you’ve only spilled a little liquid, this method should work. ‘
Warnings
* electrical shock can happen when anything electrical touches liquid- always unplug your Toshiba Satellite L300 Keyboard first.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the company’s much-anticipated iPad tablet computer Wednesday, calling it a new third category of mobile device that is neither smart phone nor laptop, but something in between.
The iPad will start at $499, a price tag far below the $1,000 that some analysts were expecting. But Apple must still persuade recession-weary consumers who already have other devices to open their wallets yet again. Apple plans to begin selling the iPad in two months.
Raven Zachary, a contributing analyst with a mobile research agency called The 451 Group, considered the iPad a laptop replacement, especially because Apple is also selling a dock with a built-in keyboard.
Carolyn Reidy, chief executive of Simon & Schuster, called the iPad a “terrific device” that gives readers the ability to adjust the typeface and turn pages by touching a finger to the screen, as opposed to pushing a button, as the Kindle requires.
Applause rang out as Jobs stepped onto the stage to introduce the iPad to hundreds of analysts, bloggers and other guests at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
Sitting on stage in a cozy leather chair, Jobs demonstrated how the iPad is used for surfing the Web with Apple’s Safari browser. The CEO typed an e-mail using an on-screen keyboard and flipped through photo albums by flicking his finger across the screen.
He also showed off a new electronic book store and a book-reading interface that emulates the look of a paper book. That puts the iPad in competition with Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle and e-book store.
Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies Inc. called the iPad a great multipurpose mobile device — and the first tablet with a chance of success with consumers.
Jobs said the device would be useful for reading books, playing games or watching video, describing it as “so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone.”
But Forrester Research analyst James McQuivey said he does not believe the iPad offered enough additional features for consumers to justify buying yet another gadget, or to call it a new category of device.
Unlike a laptop, the iPad has an accelerometer, so gamers can tilt the device to control what’s happening on the screen. And the iPad is lighter and easier to hold for long periods of time while watching a movie or TV show.
Its large screen makes it much easier to touch type than on a smart phone, and it is extremely responsive to finger swipes and taps for easy scrolling through Facebook, photo albums and news articles.
In an e-mail, he criticized its lack of social features, such as ways to share photos and home video and recommend books.
The half-inch-thick iPad is larger than the company’s popular iPhone but similar in design. It weighs 1.5 pounds and has a touch screen that is 9.7 inches diagonally. It comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage, and has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built in.
Jobs said the device has a battery that lasts 10 hours and can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.
But Bajarin said Jobs’ presentation only touched the tip of what the iPad could do for newspapers, magazines and book publishers, three industries struggling in the transition to the digital age.
A new newspaper reader program from The New York Times and a game from Electronic Arts Inc. were demonstrated during the event. The iBookstore launched with titles from Penguin, Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Hachette Book Group and Macmillan, and will open up to other publishing houses.
Accompanied at times by executives from Apple and other companies, Jobs played showman throughout the hour-and-a-half presentation, slowly revealing details about the iPad. When he announced the price — lower than what had been speculated — it was accompanied by the sound of glass shattering.
Like iPods and the iPhone, the iPad can sync with Apple’s Macintosh and Microsoft’s Windows computers. Jobs said the iPad will also be better for playing games and watching video than either a laptop or the small screen of a smart phone.
Jobs, 54, a pancreatic cancer survivor who got a liver transplant last year, looked thin as he introduced the highly anticipated gadget, though he seemed to have more energy than at Apple’s last event in September.
Apple had kept its latest creation tightly under wraps until Wednesday’s unveiling, though many analysts had correctly speculated that it would be a one-piece tablet computer with a big touch screen.

A day after delivering a State of the Union address aimed at showing recession-weary Americans he understands their struggles, President Barack Obama intends to award $8 billion in stimulus funds to develop high-speed rail corridors and sell the program as a jobs creator.
Though the White House is quick to point out that the economy is no longer on the brink of a depression, as it was when Obama took office, stemming the free fall hasn’t translated into job growth. The unemployment rate has hovered near 10 percent for several months, while Obama’s approval ratings have dropped.
It’s common practice for presidents to head out of the nation’s capital following the State of the Union to reinforce their message. In Obama’s first post-speech stop in Florida, he’ll face a populace where more people disapprove of his performance than approve — 49 percent to 45 percent, according to a new Quinnipiac poll, the first time the numbers there have shifted in that direction since Obama’s election.
Even experts who favor high-speed rail question whether the awards Obama will announce Thursday can turn into the job generators the administration is hoping for. Because the U.S. has never had the kind of bullet trains found in Europe and Asia, there are no U.S. engineering companies or manufacturers with experience in high-speed rail. Anthony Perl, who heads the National Research Council’s panel on intercity passenger rails, said that means much of the technology will have to be purchased abroad.
Getting Americans back to work is a theme that is expected to play prominently in Obama’s State of the Union address. He’s expected to talk in the speech about recovery act projects that will be getting started in the coming weeks and months, though the high-speed rail awards won’t be announced until Thursday’s event.
Obama and Vice President Joe Biden plan to announce grants for 13 major corridors during a town hall meeting in Tampa, Fla., Thursday, the president’s first public appearance following his speech to the nation. It’s an attempt by the White House to show that getting Americans back to work is the president’s top priority and that he has a plan for how to do it.
The $8 billion in funding for high-speed trains and other passenger rail projects is part of the $787 billion recovery act. Besides the 13 corridors receiving grants, a White House official said several smaller awards will be made for improvements to existing rail lines. Overall, 31 states will receive funds.
The official said the projects are expected to create or save tens of thousands of jobs in areas like track-laying, manufacturing, planning and engineering, though there is no time frame for how long it will take for those jobs to develop. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak ahead of the president’s announcement.
The president’s visit to the region means Florida’s proposal for a high-speed line connecting Orlando and Tampa is likely to receive funding. California’s proposal for an 800-mile-long rail line from Sacramento to San Diego and a nine-state proposal in the Midwest are also considered strong contenders.
At a rail manufacturing conference last year, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said more than 30 foreign and domestic companies have promised to establish or expand operations in the United States if they are chosen to build high-speed lines.
Still, high-speed rail experts say that if the administration spreads the $8 billion among more than a handful of projects, none of the projects will get enough money to get up and running.
“If they want this money to have an impact they are going to have to give a lot to a few states,” said lobbyist Tim Gillespie, who represents two large French rail companies.
